Making Tax Digital - From the 6th of April 2026 tax is changing!

Making tax digital has changed.

The HMRC has amended the criteria and start date.

From the 6th of April 2026 tax is changing!

If you have gross income/turnover of £50,000 or more from either:

  • Self-employment

  • Landlord – rental

  • Beneficiary of a trust

  • Or a combination of these

Then you qualify!

If you have gross income/turnover of £30,000 then you will need to do this from 6th of April 2027.

What you need to do...

  1. Use software that allows you to create and store digital records of each transaction.

  2. Every 3 months send updates to the HMRC of total income and expenditure.

  3. Confirm end of period statements.

  4. Make a final declaration.

Reports/Deadlines:

The deadline for making your final declaration is 31 January following the tax year.

Late filing will lead to penalties.

Use the button below to visit the government website and read the guidance on 'Making Tax Digital':

We can help by providing the software tools for you to be ready when making tax digital comes into effect. We will start to move clients over onto these platforms over the next few years.

We recommend you act now so you can get used to how you will need to keep your records going forward and how to report to the HMRC.

Once your tax return for 2025 is submitted, the HMRC will cross check your income and write to you to confirm that you will need to sign up for making tax digital.

As your agent we can do this on your behalf, as well as submit your quarterly updates. There will be an additional cost associated with this support and we will begin to notify you of the service and cost options early next year.
